London Free Press: Newspapers in Education

Newspaper in EducationWelcome to The London Free Press Newspaper in Education (NIE) program. Teachers across Canada and around the world have discovered that the daily newspaper is highly motivating to pupils of all ages.

The daily newspaper is exciting and topical. Unlike conventional textbooks, it highlights here-and-now issues that young people are keenly interested in. The NIE program supports educators as they use newspapers to teach children (and adults) to read, analyze information, and develop critical thinking skills. By delivering The London Free Press to classrooms at reduced rates, we aim to provide educators with an inexpensive, yet relevant teaching aid.

Teacher Resources
The London Free Press offers a number of resource materials that provide newspaper-based activities. The skill areas touched upon cut across the curriculum:

  • language arts, including listening, speaking, reading, writing
  • mathematics
  • creative activities - art, drama
  • map and globe skills
  • research
  • analyzing

Teaching resources can be ordered either in conjunction with a newspaper order or separately. As a bonus, after you have ordered 100 newspapers during the school year, you will receive your choice of a free teacher resource package.
