BMW 7 Series Sedan
Special to Sun Media   April 16, 2008

Overall: The pinnacle of BMW luxury and technology.

Drivetrain: Base 360-horsepower V8, but the V12 is only available on long-wheelbase versions.

Just what kind of luxury and technology are we talking about when it comes to the 7-Series BMW? How do 16-way adjustable seats sound? How about an optional night-vision system? How about an extended-length version with a V12? How about a special-order process whereby you can pick from three iridescent paint finishes, super-soft leather, illuminated door sills, your choice of headliner material, special wheels and wood interior finishes? Welcome to the 7-Series. You not only need to pony up the required funds for one of these uber-cruisers, but you'll need more than a passing familiarity with, and an appreciation for, the kind of high-tech gadgetry contained within the 7's sumptuous cabin. Perhaps the most impressive, or unusual depending on your point of view, feature is the iDrive. This brainy device uses a single joystick-type controller located in the centre console that works in tandem with a dash-mounted screen to manage up to 700 vehicle operations, including climate control, telephone, navigation and entertainment systems. The big Bimmer also features standard adaptive headlights (that pivot left or right with your turn), Active Roll Stabilization that collaborates with the all-aluminum suspension to reduce body lean in turns, and Active Ride that shrugs off bumpy roads. And that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the technological and safety systems found under the skin of this Teutonic marvel. Both the regular- and extended-length models continue for 2008 with a base 360-horsepower 4.8-litre V8 and six-speed automatic transmission. The 438-horsepower 6.0-litre V12 remains an option on extended-length models.
